On 19th November 2014 a one-day workshop with the title “Metals in Wind Turbines – Challenges and Ideas” was held by MAC (Section for Materials Science and Advanced Characterization) together with EERA Wind Subprogramme: Structures and Materials (headed by Denja Lekou, CRES, Greece).
11 EERA partners were represented by 34 participants in total. The discussion was stimulated by 4 invited talks by Siemens Wind Power, University of Cambridge, Max-Planck Institut für Eissenforschung and MAC DTU Wind Energy. The workshop was very inspiring with many discussions and as a result, 4 themes were identified for future collaboration between the EERA partners:
• Identification of crack initiation sites • Relations between cracks and so-called white etched areas
• Development of new steels
• Improved weldings
